How to Become Ordained in Hawaii

Many times couples getting married in Hawaii simply hire a wedding officiant, say their vows and, voila, you're married.  But sometimes couples want a close friend or family member to perform their ceremony and just don't know how to go about getting them to do so.

Here are the steps to becoming commissioned to perform a legal wedding ceremony in Hawaii:

  • Get ordained. You could go through seminary, but a cheaper, quicker option is to get ordained online. The Universal Life Church at themonastery.org will ordain anyone for free online regardless of religious background. Typically it takes about 72 hours to receive your certification.
  • Apply for your license. You will need a letter of recommendation and identification card. Take your information to the Hawaii Department of Health Vital Records Office.

TIP: Hold a rehearsal before the wedding day so that everyone knows what to expect and things run smoothly.
