Natural Bridal Makeup Misconceptions

It's a misconception to think that brides who want natural looking makeup for their wedding day should spend less than a bride who would like a more dramatic wedding day makeup look. I hear this a lot from brides who aren't aware of what's involved in a basic natural bridal makeup look. They assume because the look isn't heavily applied that it must be easy to achieve. Wrong!

Natural looking makeup takes a special skill set that not every makeup artist possesses. With natural looking makeup it's more about perfecting the look of the skin and paying extra attention to details like eyebrows (ensuring they look natural but full,) enhancing cheekbones and highlighting areas of the face to bring out natural beauty. It's about understanding colour theory and ensuring the right colours are used on you to bring out your best features and tone down the area's you don't like. To achieve a truly natural bridal makeup look takes time (I take approximately 30 minutes)and it takes more product (makeup) than you might think to achieve the look. I always kid my brides and say "it's hard to believe it takes all this to make you look like you're not wearing any makeup at all!"  : -)

In order to look natural in photographs you should be looking for artists who also regularly work in the commercial or advertising sector of the business. Why? These artists understand what it takes to look natural in pictures and are trusted in the industry to do so.  It's not about using less makeup, it's about knowing where and how to place the makeup on the face to give a beautiful natural look. These artists use the right products and have in depth experience with lighting and photography for the purpose of print work. This would be a benefit to you on your wedding day. Yes, you want to look naturally beautiful in person but let's not forget the thousands of dollars you're spending on photography for your wedding day too. Doesn't it make sense to hire an artist who possses both skill sets?

I'm not saying that an experienced bridal makeup artist who does not work in the commercial/advertising sector can't also possess this ability but I am stating that natural makeup is a skill that takes time to learn and perfect.  It's not simply about putting less makeup on your face - it's about providing expertise that the masses cannot provide for you.

So, it only makes sense that a natural bridal makeup look should not cost you less than if you asked for a more dramatic look. There is more to natural looking makeup than the amount of colour and/or product used on the face.

Remember at your bridal makeup trial when you ask your makeup artist for a "natural look" just what's involved to get you looking naturally beautiful!

See you all soon!
